Yesterday was the day in which Marty McFly and Doc Emmett Brown arrived at the future in the second chapter of the critically acclaimed film Back to the Future. And, even though there are no flying cars, shoes that tie themselves up, clothes that dries itself, or 3D holograms at the movie theatres, present day is still quite more technological than 30 years ago.
When it comes to our beloved discipline, ours is the most avant-garde website in the continent: CodigoPoker, a website that came from the past, lives in the present and is always looking towards the future.
And since we are remembering McFly’s heroic deeds in his flashy DeLorean, let’s look back at the times that left a mark in poker. Also, we’d like to know something: what time would you like to go back to and play a hand here and there?
The DeLorean: Today!
Although it is true, there is no exact science when it comes to the beginning of poker, it is well known that the most supported hipothesis is that our dear sport is a mixture of various other games. There are indications that circa 969 a.C., the Chinese emperor, Mu-tsung would play a game of cards with rules similar to those of poker. So…then, first stop is China?
In Renaissaince times, in Spain there was a game called Primero [First], which then became called poque in France and in Germany, it adopted the name Pochen. This game, is considered by historians, as the «father of poker», given that its rules are quite like the ones we have today.
Then, poker travelled from the Old Continent to North America by way of the French settlers, and from there it moved all around the country following the Mississippi river. Maybe you’d like to get on your DeLorean and play a game on a steam ship? Beware of badbeats though, people payed a steep price back then.
A game from olden days
Afterwards, poker expanded and became widely popular. During civil war times in America, the game was played by American soldiers and British soldiers alike. A game for your country?
In WWII, the quintessential game was Caribbean Stud Poker everywhere. It reigned for over 40 years, until the 70’s, when Texas Hold’em became the Cadillac of Poker thanks to the World Series of Poker. Perhaps, you’d like to play the first ever WSOP?
In time, poker spread out to the rest of the world, and we saw the birth of online poker, the great live circuits, and more. Would you go back to grinding with thousands of American players at PokerStars?
As evidenced by our website, CodigoPoker, the future of poker is written daily. What will the future years bring to our beloved sport? We do not know, but if you want to, you are welcome to make the imaginary trip and tell us what we might find waiting for us in the world of poker.
Welcome to the future, Martin McFly!
